30 Years of History – The Drake Sound Archive
The Drake Sound Archive is like a time capsule that holds clues to the world in the last two decades. The late Geoff Drake set up the archive by audio recording every meeting of the Cardiff Business Club.
History in the Making.....
The audio recordings include public figures and business leaders; Rhodri Morgan in 2004, Charles Kennedy as Leader of the Liberal Democrats in 2001, Martyn Lewis, BBC TV Broadcaster in 1993.
Sir Tim Rice the lyricist for many of our generations most popular musicals spoke to the Club in 2004 and David Cameron just before his first term as Prime Minister in 2007.
Each recording includes the Chairman’s opening remarks, the formal introduction of the guest speaker by the host, the public address and answers from the floor and the formal vote of thanks to the speakers. These recordings capture the tone and atmosphere of each Club meeting.
All the recordings are available to the public at the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales.

The Cardiff Business Club is the leading organisation of its kind in Wales. Founded in 1912 and with HRH the Prince of Wales as its Patron, the Club holds dinners with speakers of international standing to address the members. These events are usually held in the St David’s Hotel in Cardiff.
